Fall Bread Classes

When the bread baker runs away to Big Bend with her husband for several weeks and then zips off to a family wedding, there is very little time left for bread classes. So sad! Although time is limited we want to offer a few opportunities to get together for a morning or afternoon of baking, conversation and some pretty good eating! The dates below are what the calendar will allow the moment.  For the sake of flexibility we’re not going to name the classes until the first student signs up – so first come is definitely first served.  You get to decide what class we do on what day/time – at least if you’re fast!!

The dates and times we have available are:

Tuesday, October 30th at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, November 17th at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Here are the classes we are happy to offer:

Beginning Bread Baking:   This class will cover all the basics – from selecting your ingredients to kneading, shaping and baking your bread.  We will make loaves, dinner rolls, hamburger buns, kolaches, and perhaps some cinnamon rolls. Yum!  This class is suitable for beginning bread bakers and those who want to “warm up” their basic skills.  Children 12 and over are welcome when accompanied by an adult. The cost is $20 per person or $40 per family.

Advanced Bread Baking  This class will cover all of the baking process from selecting your flour to baking your bread but will have a special focus on using soaked grains and slow rising methods.  By soaking the grains and allowing for longer rising periods, these breads develop a full depth of flavor and provide our bodies with uninhibited access to their total nutritional value.  The loaves we make will be full of all the rich goodness of whole grains, nuts, and seeds.  This class is suitable for students with some bread baking experience. The cost is $20 per person or $40 per family.

Artisan Bread Baking – Saturday, September 15th  1:00-3:00 p.m.Artisan breads are a European tradition – something radically different than a loaf of grocery store sandwich bread.  These breads feature a small amount of yeast that is allowed to multiply slowly, fermenting a loaf with a unique taste and texture.  Baked in a very hot oven, these breads are crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside, and when made with whole grain flours, these breads have flavor that is unsurpassed!  This class is most suited to the adult student that has some bread baking experience.  The cost is $20 per person or $40 per family.

Sourdough Bread Baking  Sourdough breads are enjoying a resurgence in popular culture both because of their wonderful flavor and their high nutritional value.  Using a sourdough starter that traveled the Oregon Trail, we will make classic sourdough loaves that are crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside, and oh so very good!  You have to have patience to make sourdough bread, but it is so worth the wait!!  This bread class is most suitable for students with some bread baking experience. The cost is $20 per person or $40 per family.
