Learn to Bake Bread with Bethlehem Harvest!

There is still time to sign up for our two remaining September Bread Baking Classes – and we are beginning to schedule classes for October! We love to teach others how to make healthy whole grain bread, so we are offering a variety of classes including Basic Whole Grain Bread Baking, Sourdough Bread Baking, and Artisan Bread Baking.

All of our classes are hands on opportunities to explore bread baking, so come ready to get involved. Classes are held at our home in Friendswood, and each class costs $20 per person. Here are the dates and times for our upcoming classes:

Beginning Whole Grain Bread Baking – September 28th; 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Come and learn the basics about bread baking. We will start with whole grains which we will mill into fresh flour as we discuss the merits of fresh milling and of different types of flour. Then we will mix and knead our dough, shape it, let it rise, and bake it into delicious whole grain loaves and some other special treats. You will get your hands dirty in the best kind of way as you handle the dough and learn some techniques that will help you experience instant success when you bake at home. We will enjoy some fresh baked bread together and each participant will go home with some bread to share with their family. This class is suitable for any skill level. Children age 11 and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult. The class costs $20 per person.

Artisan Bread Baking ā€“ Saturday, September 21st; 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Artisan breads are a European tradition ā€“ something radically different than a loaf of grocery store sandwich bread. These breads feature a small amount of yeast that is allowed to multiply slowly, fermenting a loaf in a way that develops a unique taste and texture. Baked in a very hot oven, these breads are crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside, and when made with whole grain flours, these breads have flavor that is unsurpassed! You will be able to enjoy some of the bread we create in class and take a little home for your family. This class is most suited to the adult student that has some bread baking experience. The cost for this class is $20 per person.

Sourdough Bread Baking – Friday, October 4th; 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Using a sourdough starter that traveled the Oregon Trail, we will walk through the entire process of making sourdough loaves that are crusty on the outside, chewy on the inside, and absolutely delicious! We will learn about starter management, using whole grain flours, dough development, shaping and proofing the loaves, and baking tangy loaves that are both nutritious and delicious! You have to have patience to make sourdough bread, but it is so worth the wait!! We will eat some bread in class and you will be able to take some home to your family. This bread class is most suitable for students with some bread baking experience. Cost for the class is $20 per person.
